Chapter of the American Red Cross provided immediate emergency aid to seven people after a fire Wednesday afternoon on Budd Street in Carthage, Jefferson County. The Red Cross provided financial assistance to two families for necessities such as shelter, food and clothing. The first family consisted of two adults and a 3 year old child. In the second family, there were two adults, an 8 year old, and a teenager. Volunteers also offered emotional support and comfort kits containing personal care items and stuffed animals for the children. In the coming days, Red Cross staff and volunteers will remain available to help those affected by the fire as they navigate the road to recovery. In 2016, the Red Cross responded to more than 400 home fires and other disasters in the 24-county Eastern New York Region. Red Cross staff and volunteers provided assistance, care and comfort to more than 2,000 local residents last year.
